History

June 6th marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day. On that day in 1944, the combined fighting forces of Britain, Canada and the U.S. attacked a true and present and fierce existential threat to freedom.

General Eisenhower said, “This operation is not being planned with any alternatives. This operation is planned as a victory, and that’s the way it’s going to be. We’re going down there, and we’re throwing everything we have into it, and we’re going to make it a success.”

The U.S. contingent was made up of 73,000 soldiers. They counted 10,000 casualties within the first 24 hours. It was just the start.  It is difficult to grasp the magnitude of personal sacrifices made by the men and women who served then - and who serve now.
